Our customer manufactures precision components designed and developed by innovative, digital, efficient processes. They rely on BFW for some of their product development processes. They use BFW machines, including BFW-made HELIX, BMV 60, ORION FX 5500, and BMV Pro.

The customer sought to acquire actuator cylinder machining solutions for its customers. Actuator cylinders are used in commercial aircraft and engine components. They play a pivotal role in ensuring the efficient and precise operation of various systems. Actuator cylinders are critical components in the aviation industry. They’re used to control the movement of aircraft surfaces, like flaps, slats, and landing gear. 

These cylinders convert hydraulic or pneumatic energy into mechanical motion. This allows for the precise adjustment of control surfaces during different phases of flight. Actuator cylinders are used in aircraft engine components. They help mechanisms like variable geometry systems, thrust reversers, and fuel control systems work efficiently. 

The reliability and precision of actuator cylinders are paramount in aviation. They directly impact flight safety, fuel efficiency, and overall performance. Customer requirements/challenges

Our customer aims to be the preferred supplier for complex, precision, mid-sized engineering components and subsystems. The company requires actuator cylinders for some processes, to support specific dimensions and tolerance, specifically used in commercial aircraft and engine component applications.

1. CNC Turning: For one of its processes, the company required a CNC turning machine with a basic diameter of 28.7 mm and a tolerance of 5 microns. 

2. Precision Milling: For another process, the company required a basic dimension tolerance of 5 microns.

Solutions offered by BFW

For the process that required a basic dimension of diameter 28.7 mm and tolerance of 5 microns, BFW provided Orbitur. The machine is designed to meet the requirements of job shops as well as mass production.

2. BFW MU VMC

For the process that required a basic dimension tolerance of 5 microns, BFW provided the MU Vertical Milling Center (VMC). BFW VMC machines provided speed, flexibility, agility, rigidity, and durability. They enabled our customer to design and develop successfully. Furthermore, within BFW’s MU platform, they implemented ICtech. It’s a special composite material technology. It minimised vibration, enhanced surface finish, and improved precision. Using RTC (real-time thermal compensation) technology minimised thermal impacts. This ensures sustained accuracy across operations.
